The Yokohama City Camera and Photography Collection
As one of the birthplaces of photography in Japan, Yokohama is said to have greatly contributed to the history of photography and visual culture of modern Japan. In view of this history and with a vision to promote itself as the creative city of visual culture, Yokohama City acquired a collection of an approximately 12,000 items, including cameras, photographs, accessories, and literature, between 1993 and 1994. The items were originally collected from around the world by a U.S. collector Thurman F. Naylor over the course of 40 years. The Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino has engaged in preserving and managing this collection of high significance that provides comprehensive perspectives to trace the world history of cameras and photography. The collection is introduced to public through exhibitions and other various events.
